Activities

1. Suppose the raven is the speaker of this poem, flashing back to its arrival at the man’s chamber. Using your best creative skills, write a poem of at least two six-line stanzas, incorporating as similar a rhyme scheme and meter to Poe’s “The Raven” as possible. In the lines of your stanzas, give the raven a voice beyond the single word “Nevermore.” Reveal the answers to at least three of the following questions in the lines of your poetry:

  • Who sent the raven on this errand, and for what purpose?
  • How does the raven feel about its obligation to the man?
  • What kind of tone does the raven convey through connotation and figurative language?
  • Do the raven and the man participate in a more “natural” dialogue?

2. The opening lines of “The Raven” indicate that the speaker is retelling a memory of the raven’s appearance in his chamber. Choose one of the following artistic expressions to depict the speaker’s internal and external life in the present moment.

a. Create a TikTok from the speaker’s perspective with consideration of these questions: What does he want to express to his audience about his memories of the raven? Would he choreograph a dance to express his mood and attitude? Or would he speak into the camera, directly to his audience?
