Chapter Summaries & Analyses
Knox and Maeve learn that Phoebe missed school because she has been at the hospital with Emma. Phoebe says that Emma still hasn’t told anyone the reason for her sudden alcohol consumption.
Bronwyn confronts Maeve about keeping her symptoms a secret. Maeve thinks that she will no longer repay “love with fake indifference anymore” (229). She decides that she isn’t going to pretend that she doesn’t want her life. Maeve swears to her sister that she will be honest if there is a next time. Bronwyn says she must go help Addy prepare for the Ashton’s rehearsal dinner. Bronwyn confesses to Maeve that she loves Nate and leaves, driving off on the back of Nate’s motorcycle.
The night of the rehearsal dinner, Knox and Maeve stalk Intense Guy while sitting at a coffee shop in Roland Village. Maeve finally cracks the first document she emailed herself from Mrs. Myer’s computer. Unfortunately, it appears irrelevant, documenting a case settled for Weber Reed Consulting group in Florida. Maeve mentions to Knox that Darkestmind has been very quiet since his last post threatening Phoebe. Knox finally sees the handwriting on the note and matches it to the death threats Eli received. Knox pulls up the D’Agostino case on his computer since Sandeep told him the two were most likely related.
