Describe the character growth of Eldon and Frank in the novel. How does Eldon’s behavior begin to change as he spends time with Frank? In what ways does Frank’s attitude toward his father change? How do Eldon and Frank reconcile their relationship?
Teaching Suggestion: Students may find it beneficial to describe Frank’s perceptions of Eldon at the beginning of the novel and the events that change his perspective of Eldon as Eldon tells his story. Students can then describe how Eldon’s character begins to change as he spends time in the wilderness with Frank. If students are discussing as a class, it may be helpful for them to create a written response to the question in the form of brainstormed ideas or noted examples from the text before responding orally.
Differentiation Suggestion: Students who benefit from assistance with analysis may find it helpful to discuss the growth of Eldon and Frank in small groups; one student can record bulleted ideas, examples, and phrases on a shared document. Each group member can then utilize the document in preparing an independent written response that incorporates additional ideas.
