Activities

Use this activity to engage all types of learners, while requiring that they refer to and incorporate details from the text over the course of the activity.

“Community Resource Page”

In this activity, students create a Community Resource Page to provide resources for people struggling in your local community.

  • Think of the different items Julian might have needed to live as a normal student in his community.
  • Additionally, what items are not mentioned in the book but may be something people need in your community?
  • Compile a list of resources in your community that are available to people in need. Explain what the resources are and how to contact the resource.
  • Present your findings to the class and explain how some of the resources could have been used to help Julian, and how your additional resources might work to benefit others in need.

Once everyone has shared individual findings, work in groups of 4-5 to pool your resource ideas on a display board or a hallway bulletin board in a way that offers the information clearly and in a user-friendly manner. Your group might also add your list of resources to a school or community website.

Teaching Suggestion: Students may think of resources such as the school counselor, Habitat for Humanity, or various charities that offer resources to families in need.
